Geek³

Originally posted at WNE on 07/31/07

Twice in my 25 years I have been in situations were I realized the full scale and ultimate limit of my geekdom. I looked deep into the nerdy nether and was left wanting.

Not addressing my qualifications might make this story feel a bit empty, so I'll climb that hill first. I have been playing video games for 19 years and while that may seem normal these days with the popularity of games like Halo in frats across America, my love goes deeper. Playing MMO's takes it to another level, but I read the fan fiction and spend countless hours at lore sites to boot. Building computers is a hobby now , but at one point it was an obsession. Owning action figures used to be as simple as playing with them, now I buy them as decoration. Finally, I listen to podcast, watch vidcast, read webcomics and write two blogs.

Now that I have established how deep the rabbit hole goes, let me share what is too far for me. In sixth grade I collected comics and eventually comic cards (think baseball cards, but with super heroes), when I got to seventh grade I discovered magic cards. What was not to like? I collected cards already (baseball and comic) and I liked games. The combination of the two should have been geek heaven. No such luck, I end up buying a starter deck from a kid on the bus for five dollars and then selling them back the next day. Sitting on my bed the night I essentially rented some magic cards I came to the realization that while the concept still seemed cool to me, the act of actually playing would be outside of my comfort zone.

Lesson learned. Nope, while living on shit block some eight years later I discovered Warhammer 40,000 or just "40k" if your in the know. I love miniatures, I had a brief model railroad fling in middle school and still dream of having a room in our house dedicated to the craft when I'm older. I also love a good RTS, I have played most every major RTS title available since first playing the original Warcraft demo. Again, combine the two there should be geek magic in the air...right?

I spent two weeks pouring over "40k" fan sites, reading painting tutorials and planning my army. Eventually I ordered a few kits online and picked up paints from a local shop. I would attend class during the day and come home to paint and glue the night away. When my army was nearing completion I decided to stop by for a scheduled game night at the previously mentioned store. The crowd assembled at the shop was a shock to my system. I was expecting like minded fans who had as much passion for the art as they did for the game. What I got was pimple faced kids dressed in black and forty somethings who looked like they still lived with their parents. They had rag tag armies, that were at best unpainted and at worst not even official game pieces. Short a Razorback, just substitute it with a spray painted hotwheel. Dreams crushed, I went home and boxed up my paints and unfinished army.

I have been tempted to dip my toe in "40k" pool since the opening of an official Games Workshop, but the scars are still too fresh. Twice burned by geek hobbies, I am hesitant to fly too close to the sun on wings made of circuit boards and Mt.Dew. For now I will hold up in my geek fortress (read: my house) and stick with console modding and late night video game binges.

Gruul Down!

Took only three trys last night and the big bad dragon killer was only his belly. After the wipefest that was Tuesday night it was nice to walk in and just drop him. I'm hoping that next week things will go even smoother. One shots and farming status in under an hour a la Onyxia would be awesome.

Head meet wall, I mean Gruul

Last night we stepped into Gruul's Lair for the second time as a full guild. After the wipefest that was High King last week I was pumped that we learned from our mistakes and would get through him easily and then get lots of attempts on Gruul.

On the first pull no one healed the main tank and we were done in 5 seconds. Pull #2 went better, but we lost an off tank early and things spiraled out of control. The third attempt proved to be the sweet spot everyone did their job, focused and we had two pairs of T4 shoulders and a rouge helm to show for it. So on to Gruul, a lot of our raiders had downed him before (including yours truly), but we had about 10 who had never seen him.

The first try went bad, we had 5 people die on the first ground slam and wiped shortly there after. Our second attempt proved to be the second closest we would get all night (25%). From there on our attempts got progressively worse. Our melee kept pulling aggro from the tank, our healers would get silenced and not call it out and random people still died to ground slams. By the 7th attempt the raid leader let everyone know that it would be our last so they needed to focus. Beyond an bugged range aggro pull (range should not be able to pull aggro) by me at the start we focused and got him down to 20% at which point the MT died again.

While the repairs are expensive and the wipes are frustrating it really does feel nice to feel like we are progressing. We were in one group Kara limbo not three weeks ago and now we are downing High King in three trys. We are going back to Gruul's again tonight with what should be a renewed focus, I'll post screens here if that is really the case.

Arena Notes

Still mixing and matching rosters on different teams, I'm still on the same 2v2 team, but was kicked from my brothers 3v3 team /cry. It was for the best though, because I went 9-1 with my new 3v3 team this week and earned 490 arena points for it. The roster includes Grajam who I mentioned previously and Penfifteen, Grajam's and my friend from Mal'Ganis. He and Grajam both came from top arena teams on Mal'Ganis to try and sweep the 2v2 bracket for Nazjatar's battle group. I just happen to be friends with both and was lucky enough to be included in their 3v3.

Rank Notes
Not much to say on this front, with no new gear in the last week I dropped to #8 on the server in frost damage.

"3, 2,...Ah Shit!"

Those where the words that came out of my mouth on our second High King attempt last night. I was assigned to spellsteal tank Krosh Firehand at the start of the raid last night and was directly responsible for our first wipe and contributed to the second.

To start the fight I was to count down to my pull on ventrilo. The fight requires a lot of spell stealing and fire wards. So I thought I would prepare before hand and setup new hotkeys for the two spells as they aren't spells I normally use. On my first attempt at pooling I was very nervous and hit the wrong spell and in attempt to correct my mistake I did not spell steal which killed in two shots (blastwave and fireball) me and wiped half the raid.

Very embarrassed and determined to get it right I decided to reset my key binds and try again. This time I would go with a slow cast spell at max range and spell steal while Krosh ran over to me. As I creped over to get in range I counted down from three. Well as the title suggest before I got to one I pulled with my body instead of a spell. While not a deal breaker it left our healers unprepared and one of our off tanks was dead within 5 seconds. I was just tanking away when I realized things were going to hell and the raid was running to the exit.

I didn't get it right the second time, so our guild/raid leader pulled me off tank duty and put me on DPS. I completely agreed with his decision, as I had two attempts to learn to pull and screwed it up both times. Had our healers been more experienced with the fight we could have kept going on the second try, but as they weren't it was on me to give them the best attempt pull possible. I felt like crap, I hate letting pull down or not holding up my end of anything in life. Hopefully I will get another try this coming Tuesday. This time I will give a longer count down and POM whatever spell I pull with.

Guild Notes
High king did die...took a while...but still he is dead.

Arena Notes
Grajam jumped in with both feet on our 2v2 team, he dropped our pally and picked up a warlock (Ixodor). They have gone 18-6 this week which took our rating to 1710 and there goal for the week is a rating of 2000. I will hang back till the 2000 rating and then start a steady diet of 30% of our matches next week as I will most likely be the weakest player of our three.

You Can't Craft This!

I'm done! Thats it, finally got all my crafted gear, with the girdle of ruination its complete. So no more farming right? Wrong, well maybe not a definitive wrong, but damn near close to it. Speaking with our pro as hell fire mage last night I got the wild hair that I might respec and go deep fire with him. 10/48/3 is the big bad raid build on the block these days. While my 40/0/21 might keep me alive in a fight longer I will never out dps a deep fire mage in equivalent gear.

So why not go fire and start to craft my spellcloth gear? I have the sustained dps from my frost build and gear, so I won't drag the raid down during my transition. After I got done with my belt I was pretty much prepared to raid, pvp and slowly earn my epic flying mount (boring). Farming fires is easy with my build/gear and I will need a metric ton of them to make the spellfire set. The only con I can see is losing my precious arcane power. While not the best option for raiding it is clutch in pvp.

So almost all signs point to going fire, except this time I won't have the urgency of getting my set completed and can take my time knowing that I still hit pretty damn hard with frost. As an added bonus I will still have my crafted frost gear in the bank waiting on me should I ever want to go back to the frozen land of damage.

Arena Notes
Whats not to like about free loot? I joined a 2v2 arena team with my friend Chris (Grajam) & Ken (Verm) and a 3v3 team with my brother (Tazeer), Luke (Hurricane), Hellspawned & Jared (Saintsee). As long as we get 10 matches done in a week, we can expect some arena points regardless of our record. Grajam and I went 6-4 this week and I didn't get to play with the 3v3 team yet.

Guild Notes
Things have been going well! As I mentioned previously we (FDB) were recruiting like mad. Since that time we have added to our numbers in a big way. Most every new member is contributing to our progress and we actually have an in house Gruul's raid scheduled for this week. We also ran two full clear Kara groups this week and intend to do the same this weekI post here with how it goes.

Rank Notes
I jumped from #59 in frost damage on Nazjatar to #4 as of today after getting all my enchants, brand new gems and my new belt. I'm up from #155 to #93 in base damage as well. The total mage pool on the server is up from 259 to 266 which only adds to the status of my current rank.

Dog days of WoW

It has been yet another long stretch of time since I last posted. Fear not reader, I'm still going strong in WoW.

Raiding
FBD's Kara teams have combined because it was just too much of a strain trying to run two Kara groups a week. We have a soild group, includeing yours truly, that can full clear the instance in two days easily. We are gearing up a small group that has an interest in raiding, unfortunately some members get left out and we just don't have enough active members to do Gruul's on our own yet. So we are starting a major recruiting drive to get our numbers up.

On a lighter note we are ranked #11 on our server, as of today, on the new site wowjutsu.com. WoWjutsu is really cool because it self populates guild ranks based on gear from the armory, not manually inputed data like bosskillers.com. My friends in Afterlife (not the #33 in the world guild) are ranked at #18 and seem to be on good upswing as of late, so more power to them.

Crafted Gear
When Burning Crusade launched I had been herbalism/alchemy for a while dropping tailoring long before I even got my first MC purple. When the expansion dropped I assumed tailoring was going to still be as useless as ever. Upon my return to WoW a month and a half ago I was hit with realization that tailoring is not only useful, but it is almost a required profession for dps casters now. Seeing no choice, but to drop herbalism in place of tailoring I spent a small fortune and countless hours crafting my Frozen Shadoweave set. The farming is never done though, my friend recently gained the ability to create Girdle of Ruination, so I'll be farming motes of fire for the coming week.

Stats, Numbers and Ranks
I like to consider myself a numbers kind of guy, so when I saw Wow metrics recently I flipped my junk. I have been pouring over the top mages in the US and on my server's builds, gear and enchants trying to plan my progression. I am currently #59 on my server (I was #55 yesterday /cry) in frost damage, #81 in mana and #155 in raw damage out of a total of 259 mages list.

Before I sign off, I should mention again that FBD is on a major recruiting drive right now. We full clear kara and downed Gruul once with an alliance guild that did not work out. If you are interested please PST an officer or sign up on our forums.

Crafted purples and cheese,

Wrex

SNEScade Part 1

Originally posted at WNE on 07/02/07

So after to listening to the back catalog of benheck.com podcast for the past two weeks I learned two things...

1. I want to start some sort of project with my old SNES that is currently just collecting dust.

and

2. Ben and Jones don't really talk about Ben's portables, but they are some funny ass dudes.

Now that I had the motivation it was time to point it in a direction. While a portable seems really freaking cool I don't have the money to invest in parts at the moment. I do however have a full arcade controls kit sitting around from a MAME cabinet project I never actually started.

After dissembling my poor SNES beyond repair on Friday night.
[pic coming soon]
I started drawing some ideas for the look of the box in sketchup on Saturday afternoon.
[pic coming soon]
Sunday was a trip to Lowes for MDF and a lesson in the weight of MDF, by "lesson" I mean its heavy.
[pic coming soon]

I am hoping to get started on the layout of the SNEScade this week and will gladly share my progress as soon as I get the photos loaded. While I'm sharing I should point anyone reading this to the sites that I am using as a reference currently.
